Right, let’s talk about creating a wellness oasis at home, shall we? My journey started, predictably, with a back ache. Hours hunched over my laptop, trying to balance work and…well, life, had taken its toll. I realised I needed a proper workspace, and not just any workspace, but one that actually supported my wellbeing. So, I dived headfirst into the world of DIY home wellness, focusing on upcycling and crafting. It was surprisingly therapeutic!

First up: the infamous standing desk. Buying one seemed a bit extravagant, so I challenged myself to build one using what I had. Inspiration struck when I spotted an old set of drawers in the garage. These, combined with a sturdy, reclaimed wooden plank (rescued from a neighbour’s skip – always ask first!), formed the foundation of my standing desk. Securing the plank to the drawers was simple enough with wood screws. The key here is height. Aim for a desk surface that allows your elbows to be at roughly 90 degrees when typing. I used a spirit level to ensure everything was perfectly horizontal. It wasn’t pretty, granted, but it was functional, and significantly cheaper than buying new.

Next came the chair. Even with a standing desk, you’ll need to sit sometimes. Finding a comfortable and ergonomic chair on a budget can be tricky, but small adjustments make a huge difference. Pay close attention to the lumbar support – a rolled-up towel can work wonders if your current chair lacks adequate lower back support. The height is crucial, too. Your feet should be flat on the floor (or a footrest if necessary), and your knees at a 90-degree angle. The armrests should allow your shoulders to relax.

Now for the monitor. This is vital for preventing neck strain. The top of the screen should be at or slightly below eye level. If it’s too low, prop it up with books (old textbooks are ideal!). Invest in a monitor arm if you can – these offer fantastic flexibility in adjusting height, tilt, and swivel. The distance between you and the monitor should be roughly an arm’s length away.

But a wellness sanctuary isn’t just about posture. It’s about creating an atmosphere that promotes relaxation and positive energy. This is where the fun began! I decided to craft my own aromatherapy blends. Lavender essential oil is a classic for relaxation. Combine it with chamomile and a carrier oil (almond or jojoba are great) to create a soothing massage oil. For a more uplifting scent, try mixing lemon, rosemary, and peppermint. Experiment! The possibilities are endless.

To enhance my meditation practice, I made a meditation cushion. I used an old pair of jeans (upcycling again!) and filled it with buckwheat hulls (you can find these online or at health food shops). The jeans were simply sewn to form a large pillow shape before turning the item inside out and filling it to the desired density. A zip can be added to easily empty and wash the jeans cover or replace the buckwheat hulls when they break down. Buckwheat hulls are perfect because they mould to the body’s shape, providing excellent support.

Finally, consider your space itself. Could an orangery, if you have one, be transformed into a yoga studio? The natural light and connection to the outdoors create a wonderfully calming environment. If you don’t have an orangery, no problem! A dedicated corner in your living room will suffice. Clear the space, add a yoga mat, and perhaps some potted plants. Soft lighting is key, and consider adding a diffuser with your favourite aromatherapy blend. These spaces are perfect for all ages, consider easy to follow yoga exercises available freely online.

Through small adjustments to the workspace and a little creativity, my backache has dissipated and a new sense of relaxation now surrounds me. From reclaiming wood and upcycling old clothes, all the way to filling the air with relaxing aromas, my journey has shown me how to use items already available in the home and transform them into tools for comfort and wellbeing. Consider the advice provided and soon you too could have a perfectly ergonomic and wellness enhanced work and relaxation space.
