Hello fellow home entertaining enthusiasts! I’m thrilled to be diving into the wonderful world of outdoor gatherings with you. Summer’s here, and that means backyard BBQs, garden parties, and outdoor movie nights are in full swing. But let’s be honest, nothing ruins a perfectly planned soiree quite like uninvited guests – of the buzzing, biting variety. So, I sat down with Lola, a seasoned outdoor party pro, to get her top tips on keeping those pesky critters at bay.

“Lola, thanks for chatting with me! Your garden parties are legendary – always gorgeous and, crucially, bug-free. What’s your secret?” I asked.

Lola laughed. “Secret’s a bit strong, love. It’s more about being prepared and thinking ahead. The key is layering your defences!” She explained.

Mosquito Mayhem: Winning the Battle

“Right, mosquitoes are Public Enemy Number One, aren’t they?” I nodded.

“Absolutely! Start with eliminating breeding grounds. Empty any standing water – flowerpots, paddling pools, even upturned bottle tops can become mosquito havens. Refresh bird baths every other day.” Lola advised. This is such a simple, often overlooked step. Think like a mosquito – where would they want to lay their eggs?

Next, she emphasised the power of natural repellents. “I swear by citronella candles, but not just any citronella. Look for high-quality ones with a decent percentage of citronella oil. Place them strategically around your seating area. And don’t forget those old-fashioned coils – they work wonders!” I personally love the ambience the flickering candlelight creates too, a bonus win for me.

Lola also mentioned essential oils. “Lavender, peppermint, eucalyptus – they all have repellent properties. You can mix them with water in a spray bottle and mist around your garden (test a small area first to be sure it doesn’t damage any plants), or use a diffuser specifically designed for outdoor use.”

For personal protection, Lola is a fan of natural bug sprays. “There are some fantastic DEET-free options available now, often based on lemon eucalyptus oil. Reapply regularly, especially after sweating.” She also wisely suggested encouraging guests to wear light-coloured clothing, as dark colours attract mosquitoes.

Fly-Free Feasts: Keeping Food Safe

Moving on to flies, Lola shared some simple but effective tricks. “Food hygiene is crucial. Keep food covered as much as possible, and use food nets to protect platters. Don’t leave scraps lying around – clear up spills immediately.” She also recommended fly traps, but not the sticky, unsightly kind. “There are some discreet and attractive fly traps available now. Some use UV light to attract flies and then trap them, others use bait. Position them away from the main eating area to draw flies away from your guests.”

She also had a clever tip for deterring flies naturally: “Planting herbs like basil, rosemary, and mint around your patio can help repel flies. They’re also handy for adding fresh flavour to your BBQ!” I thought that was a really simple and very useful tip that would look amazing in a herb garden near an orangery.

Other Pests: A General Strategy

“What about other garden pests, like ants or wasps?” I asked.

“Ants are a bit trickier, but keeping surfaces clean and free of crumbs is key. You can also try natural ant repellents like vinegar or cinnamon. Wasps are attracted to sweet things, so keep sugary drinks covered and clear up any spills immediately. I always have a wasp trap or two set up away from the main area, just in case.” She emphasized the importance of being respectful of wasps and avoiding sudden movements that could startle them.

Safety and Environment: Being Responsible Hosts

Lola stressed the importance of using pest control methods responsibly. “Always read the labels carefully and follow the instructions. Avoid using harsh chemicals that could harm beneficial insects or pollute the environment. Think about the impact on pollinators like bees and butterflies.” She also suggested informing guests if you’re using any repellents, especially those with strong scents, in case anyone has allergies or sensitivities.

Orangery Enhancements: A Year-Round Solution

We briefly touched on orangeries, and Lola pointed out that while outdoor pest control is crucial for summer gatherings, an orangery offers a fantastic, pest-free extension to your living space, perfect for year-round entertaining. You can enjoy the ambiance of the garden without the bugs! She suggested thinking about retractable screens for the orangery doors to maximise the connection with the outdoors while keeping insects out.

Lola’s advice really brought home the importance of pre-planning and creating an environment that is friendly to people but hostile to pests. By taking a few simple steps to control mosquitoes, flies, and other unwanted guests, you can create a truly enjoyable and memorable outdoor gathering. Think about eliminating breeding grounds, using natural repellents, keeping food covered, and being mindful of safety and environmental concerns. Creating a comfortable, pest-free environment for your guests will ensure your backyard BBQs, garden parties, and outdoor movie nights are a resounding success. Happy entertaining!
