When I first imagined setting up my workspace, I wanted more than just a desk and a chair. I envisioned a haven where inspiration flows as freely as the light through the glass panes of my orangery. This journey of positioning my desk for maximum enjoyment of my orangery’s surroundings was both an art and a science, and I’m thrilled to share the process with you.

Understanding the Space

The first step in the process was to get a feel for the orangery itself. Orangeries, with their glass ceilings and walls, offer a unique connection to the outside world. I spent some time just sitting in the space at different times of the day. Morning sunlight danced differently than the serene hues of dusk, and I wanted to capture these nuances at my desk. By observing the light patterns, I identified the best spots where the sun wouldn’t glare directly onto my computer screen but still kept the space bright and welcoming.

Choosing the Right Spot

Once I understood the flow of light, I considered the view. My orangery opens up to a lush garden, a symphony of colours and textures, which I wanted to be a backdrop to my working day. I positioned the desk slightly towards the left corner of the orangery, where the panoramic view of the garden is most captivating. This angle allowed me to glance up from my work and instantly feel rejuvenated by the sight of blooming flowers and fluttering birds.

To ensure the desk didn’t block the flow of the space, I opted for a minimalist design with a light wood finish that complemented the natural feel of the orangery. The positioning also kept the desk out of direct pathways, creating a dedicated work zone while maintaining the airy openness of the room.

Furniture and Ergonomics

Selecting the right furniture was crucial. I chose a desk with adjustable height, which allowed me to alternate between sitting and standing. This not only catered to ergonomic needs but also offered varied perspectives of the garden throughout the day. A comfortable, supportive chair with a breathable fabric was essential for the long hours spent writing and brainstorming.

I also considered storage options. Floating shelves on the wall nearest to the desk provided ample space for books and plants without cluttering the floor, keeping the area tidy yet inviting.

Incorporating Nature Inside

To blur the lines between indoors and outdoors, I incorporated elements of nature into the workspace itself. A small potted fern and a trailing ivy plant added a touch of greenery on the desk, while a larger potted palm in the corner echoed the leafy textures visible outside.

Subtle natural scents from a diffuser filled the air, enhancing the sensory connection to the garden. I chose a fragrance reminiscent of fresh-cut grass and wildflowers, bringing the essence of the garden indoors.

Tech Integration

While nature was the primary focus, integrating technology seamlessly was equally important. I opted for wireless solutions wherever possible to reduce cable clutter. A sleek, wireless keyboard and mouse paired with a docking station kept my work tools functional yet unobtrusive. The docking station was neatly hidden behind the desk, maintaining the clean lines and aesthetics of the workspace.

Lighting Choices

Even though natural light was abundant, I considered the importance of additional lighting for overcast days or late-night work sessions. A desk lamp with an adjustable arm and dimmable LED light was perfect for task lighting. Its design was simple, yet it provided enough illumination without overpowering the natural light scheme.

Personal Touches

Finally, I personalised the space to make it truly mine. A framed picture of my family and a small collection of travel trinkets adorned the shelves, reminders of joy and adventure. These personal touches made the workspace not just a place to work, but a sanctuary of inspiration and comfort.

Bringing It All Together

Creating a workspace in an orangery is about more than just aesthetics; it’s about crafting an environment that enhances creativity and productivity. By understanding the interplay of light, view, and functionality, I was able to carve out a space that not only serves its purpose efficiently but also enriches my daily experience. The careful selection of furniture, incorporation of natural elements, and seamless tech integration have transformed my orangery into an idyllic work retreat.

Every glance out the window, every ray of sunlight filtering through, energises and inspires me. This is more than a workspace; it’s a testament to the harmony that can be achieved when nature and design converge.
