Right, let’s dive into the gorgeous world of outdoor entertaining! I recently had a fantastic chat with Harvey, a real guru when it comes to throwing sophisticated garden parties. We talked about everything from tablescapes to bonfires, and I’m absolutely buzzing to share his wisdom with you.

We were chatting about articles on home entertaining in general. It’s not just about summer barbeques; think Christmas dinners, kid’s parties, even themed nights. The secret, apparently, is to cater to everyone. For example, when you have a mix of ages, a good quiz that appeals to older folks and younger ones alike is invaluable. Equally, when planning food, go beyond the standard burger and chips and think about a ploughman’s lunch, or a Mediterranean platter, there’s something in those for everyone. Where available, an orangery can be a wonderful addition, acting as either the central focus, or a refuge for those that want to avoid the weather. But today, we are focusing on outdoor entertaining. And it all started with the quintessential garden party.

I began by asking Harvey about the Elevated Garden Party concept: “So Harvey, what makes a garden party truly elevated?” He smiled. “It’s all about the details, darling. It’s not just throwing some sausages on the barbie. We’re talking about creating an atmosphere. Think stylish décor, elegant food, and thoughtful touches.”

Crafting the Ambience: Harvey explained that it starts with the décor. “Imagine this,” he said, “Soft lighting, perhaps fairy lights strung through the trees, or elegant lanterns dotted around the lawn. Consider a colour scheme. Muted tones, creams, and greens create a sophisticated feel. Don’t be afraid to use natural elements. Think woven placemats, wooden serving platters, and stone coasters.” He recommends sourcing vintage items from charity shops or car boot sales, as a way to provide a talking point.

Tablescapes That Wow: Moving onto the tablescape, Harvey emphasised the importance of layering. “Start with a beautiful tablecloth, ideally linen or a high-quality cotton. Then add placemats, charger plates, and elegant cutlery. Linen napkins are a must. Floral arrangements are key, but don’t go overboard. Simple, elegant arrangements in bud vases or small posies scattered down the table are perfect.”

Harvey is also a big advocate for using what you have in your garden. “Fresh herbs and edible flowers are your secret weapon! Imagine scattering violas or pansies on your salad, or garnishing your cocktails with a sprig of rosemary or mint. It adds a touch of whimsy and elevates the whole experience.”

Food and Drink Pairings: Food-wise, forget greasy burgers and chips! Harvey suggests focusing on lighter, more elegant options. “Think canapés, mini quiches, smoked salmon blinis, and salads. Use seasonal ingredients wherever possible. And for drinks? Pimms is a classic, of course, but consider offering a signature cocktail, perhaps a refreshing elderflower spritzer or a gin and tonic with cucumber and mint.” He also points out that it’s really easy to make beautiful homemade lemonade. The kids will love it too!

Backyard BBQ Bliss: But what about a BBQ, I asked? “A BBQ can be elevated too!” Harvey insisted. “It’s all about the quality of the ingredients and the presentation. Think gourmet sausages, marinated chicken skewers, and grilled halloumi. Offer a range of interesting salads and side dishes, and don’t forget the homemade sauces and chutneys.” And even with a BBQ, think about the environment you are creating. Maybe add some lighting? Soft background music? Table decorations to carry on your BBQ’s theme?

Evening Bonfires and Garden Games: Finally, we touched upon evening bonfires. “A bonfire is a fantastic way to end the evening,” Harvey enthused. “Provide blankets and cushions for guests to snuggle up in. Toast marshmallows, tell stories, and enjoy the crackling fire. For families, garden games can be really fun too. Think croquet, boules, or even a giant Jenga set.” And when it comes to activities, think about what appeals to different ages. For older members of the family, a gentle game of croquet or boules is wonderful, while children might like a treasure hunt. It also ensures everyone can join in, whatever their physical capabilities.

So, there you have it. To create a sophisticated outdoor gathering, you need to consider the atmosphere, the tablescape, the food and drink, and the activities. By paying attention to the details and using your imagination, you can transform your garden into an elegant entertaining space that everyone will love.
