I recently sat down with Bradley, a home wellness guru (my words, not his, although he didn’t disagree!), to delve into something I’ve been increasingly fascinated by: the power of light and colour in transforming our homes into true sanctuaries. I’m talking beyond just nice decor, but about crafting spaces that actively boost our wellbeing. We’ve all got that pile of ‘stuff’ in the corner, and often those rooms we avoid, but how many of us actively declutter and then redesign them with our mental health in mind?
“So, Bradley,” I started, settling into my (newly decluttered, I might add!) armchair, “what’s the first thing people should consider when thinking about light and colour in their home wellness spaces?”
“It’s all about intention,” he replied, leaning forward. “Think about the feeling you want to evoke in each space. Is it a calm, meditative atmosphere for yoga? Or an energising zone for workouts? Once you know that, the light and colour choices become much clearer.”
Okay, makes sense. So, for a yoga space, what are we talking? Bradley had some fantastic pointers. He explained that for relaxation, soft, diffused natural light is king. Think about sheer curtains that filter sunlight, creating a gentle glow. If natural light is limited, invest in dimmable lamps with warm-toned bulbs. Avoid harsh overhead lighting like the plague! For colour, Bradley suggested sticking to cool, muted tones like soft blues, greens, and greys. “These colours are known to have a calming effect on the nervous system,” he explained. “Think of the colours of the ocean or a misty forest. It’s about creating a sense of serenity.”
To put this into practice, you could start by evaluating the existing lighting in your chosen yoga space. Is it too bright? Too yellow? Too blue? Then, consider the wall colour. Is it stimulating or soothing? A simple change of bulbs or a fresh coat of paint can make a world of difference. And declutter, of course! Weeding out anything that causes visual distraction or obstructs natural light is key.
Next, we talked about energising workout spaces. Bradley’s advice here was a total 180. “Forget the muted tones,” he said with a grin. “We want vibrancy! Think about bright, energising colours like yellows, oranges, and reds. These colours stimulate the mind and body, boosting motivation and energy levels.”
Lighting should be brighter and more focused. Use layered lighting, combining natural light with task lighting to ensure you can see clearly during your workout. Avoid dark corners or shadows, which can feel draining and demotivating. It’s crucial to remember that these workout spaces should only be used for that purpose, a simple tidy can quickly allow a previously unused area to become a workout zone!
Now, let’s talk about orangeries. I’ve always been a bit obsessed with them. “Orangeries are fantastic!” Bradley exclaimed, clearly sharing my enthusiasm. “They offer the best of both worlds: tons of natural light and a connection to nature.” He suggested using the natural light in an orangery to your advantage by incorporating plants into your wellness routine. “Plants not only purify the air but also add a sense of calm and tranquility.” Consider placing your yoga mat near a window or creating a small meditation corner surrounded by greenery. The glass panes of the orangery will need to be inspected to ensure that they let in enough light and that you are not subject to prying eyes from neighbours.
Bradley also touched on the importance of considering individual preferences. “What works for one person might not work for another,” he pointed out. “Experiment with different colours and lighting schemes until you find what resonates with you.” He suggested creating mood boards or using colour swatch apps to visualise different combinations before committing to a full-scale renovation.
It struck me that it’s not about following rigid rules, it’s about creating a home environment that nurtures your wellbeing. By understanding the therapeutic power of light and colour, and decluttering to allow them to do their best work, we can transform our homes into true havens of peace and vitality. Decluttering is the essential first step, then think about those colour palettes, lighting options, and how to integrate them to create a space that energises you when you need it and soothes you when you want to unwind.
