Right, let’s talk home offices. For years, mine was… well, a disaster zone. A wobbly desk inherited from my student days, a chair that felt like sitting on a brick, and lighting that seemed designed to induce migraines. I spent hours hunched over my laptop, emerging blinking and aching at the end of the day. Sound familiar? I knew something had to change, and that’s when I really dove into the world of ergonomics. I needed to actively fix this issue, especially since I was writing articles about wellness and making the best use of your home space for exercising and relaxation.

It wasn’t just about comfort (though, let’s be honest, that was a huge driver!). I was researching and writing about how to create serene yoga spaces at home, how orangeries could enhance mindful activities, and the importance of proper exercise for all ages. Hypocritical, right? I was advocating for healthy living while secretly battling neck pain and eye strain! So, I rolled up my sleeves and embarked on a mission to transform my workspace. I’m going to tell you how I did it, so you can replicate this process at home.

The Chair Saga (and its Happy Ending)

First up, the chair. This was the biggest game-changer. I’d been stubbornly clinging to my old, inadequate chair out of some misguided sense of thrift. I started looking for an ergonomic chair. The criteria I used to select my chair were adjustability and lumbar support. I wanted to change the height of the chair, arm rests and the position of my back. I decided to visit a few office supply stores and actually sit in the chairs and try them out before making my final decision. Consider this your first ‘ah-ha’ moment: Don’t cheap out on your chair! This is where you’ll spend a huge chunk of your day, so invest in something that properly supports your body.

Desk Dynamics: Height Matters

Next, the desk. My old desk was far too low, forcing me to slump. I was looking at desks that allowed me to change the height from sitting to standing. There are a plethora of options to look at, but I found that the best were either hydraulic or had an electronic motor attached so I could change the height. I realised that I could vary between sitting and standing throughout the day. This simple change made a huge difference to my back pain and energy levels. You could even consider a standing desk converter if you’re not ready to replace your existing desk – they sit on top of your current desk and raise your laptop or monitor to a standing height.

Monitor Mania (and Proper Placement)

Okay, monitor placement is crucial. The top of your screen should be at or slightly below eye level. This encourages a neutral neck position, preventing that dreaded hunch. I bought a monitor stand to elevate my screen to the perfect height. You might also want to consider an external monitor if you’re primarily working on a laptop – the small screen size can strain your eyes and force you to lean forward. For dual monitors, position them so you don’t have to twist excessively to view either screen. Experiment to find the setup that feels most natural for you.

Keyboard and Mouse Harmony

Your keyboard and mouse placement are also important. Your elbows should be bent at a 90-degree angle, and your wrists should be straight. If you’re using a laptop, an external keyboard and mouse are essential for maintaining proper posture. Consider an ergonomic keyboard with a split design to reduce strain on your wrists. Also, make sure your mouse is close to your body to avoid reaching.

The Lighting Lowdown (Eye Strain Be Gone!)

Finally, the lighting! This was my old nemesis. I realised how important the angle was of where the light was coming from. If I had a lamp behind my screen this would create glare and make my eyes tired. If I have a lamp in front of my monitor the light would make my eyes tired. It had to be to the side. Once I had addressed this, I made sure to take regular breaks and make sure to give my eyes a rest.

So, that’s my ergonomic journey in a nutshell. It wasn’t an overnight transformation, but the gradual improvements have made a world of difference to my comfort, productivity, and overall well-being. It’s about finding what works best for you and making small, sustainable changes that add up to a big impact.

Remember, your workspace should support your health and happiness, not detract from it. By prioritising ergonomics, you’re investing in your long-term well-being and creating a more comfortable and productive environment. Happy working!
