So, I was chatting with Faith the other day about one of our favourite topics – orangeries! Specifically, we were diving deep into a fascinating project where security was paramount. It wasn’t just about creating a stunning, light-filled space; it was about building something that felt truly safe and secure. I thought I’d share the gist of our conversation, as it really highlights how you can integrate robust security without sacrificing aesthetics.

Faith kicked us off by reminding me of the client’s initial brief: they adored the idea of an orangery, a beautiful extension seamlessly blending indoors and outdoors, but they lived in an area with a higher-than-average risk of break-ins. Understandable, then, that ‘Security First’ was practically the project mantra.

The Security Blueprint

We started by brainstorming the obvious security features. But the key was making them blend in, not stick out like a sore thumb. Here’s what we landed on:

  • Reinforced Glazing: This was non-negotiable. We opted for laminated security glass. It looks just like regular glass but is incredibly difficult to shatter. Think of your car windscreen. That’s laminated glass. It cracks, but it doesn’t shatter into dangerous shards. Crucially, it also takes a serious amount of effort and noise to break through, acting as a significant deterrent.

  • High-Security Locks: We went for multi-point locking systems on all doors and windows. These engage at multiple points along the frame, making them much harder to force open than a standard lock. We even added anti-snap cylinders, which prevent burglars from snapping the lock and gaining entry.

  • Alarm System Integration: We integrated the orangery into the property’s existing alarm system. We used recessed contacts in the window and door frames, so you barely notice them. We also installed motion detectors discreetly positioned to cover key areas without being obtrusive.

  • Strategic Security Lighting: Lighting plays a huge role in deterring criminals. We installed motion-activated security lights around the perimeter of the orangery. But not just any lights! We chose lights with adjustable settings, so they wouldn’t become a nuisance to neighbours. And we made sure the lighting was warm and inviting, not harsh and glaring.

The Devil’s in the Detail: Blending Security with Style

Faith was really keen to ensure all these security measures were integrated seamlessly. The last thing we wanted was an orangery that looked like a fortress. So, we paid meticulous attention to detail:

  • Concealed Wiring: All wiring for the alarm system and lighting was carefully concealed within the structure of the orangery. No unsightly cables hanging about!

  • Colour Matching: We matched the colour of the window and door frames to the existing property, so the orangery blended in naturally. We used a colour palette that complemented both the existing house and the garden.

  • Frameless Glazing (Where Possible): Where appropriate we reduced the visual impact of security features, such as having frameless glazing units where possible, to remove visual obstructions.

Navigating Regulations and Insurance

Faith pointed out the importance of adhering to UK planning requirements and building regulations. For a standard build the security glass and alarms can be an advantage in meeting certain regulations. The building must meet the planning requirements for the local council. For a listed building you will need the correct permissions before you start the project.

Key Takeaways: Beauty, Security, and Peace of Mind

In this case study we covered how critical it is to integrate security measures into your orangery from the very start. It’s about building something that is not only stunning but also provides peace of mind. Don’t underestimate the importance of discreet integration. No one wants an orangery that looks like a prison! Match materials, hide wiring, and choose subtle colours to enhance the aesthetic of your build. By considering security from the start, and carefully considering your property, the regulations, your personal requirements, and all the key design elements, you can create a beautiful and secure space that you’ll enjoy for years to come.
