Right, let’s talk parties. Not just any party, but themed parties. I’ve always adored the idea of transporting my guests to another world, even if it’s just for a few hours. And lately, I’ve been particularly drawn to the glitz and glamour of the Roaring Twenties. So, naturally, I decided to throw a Speakeasy bash. Here’s how I brought the Jazz Age to life.
Setting the Scene: Art Deco Dreams
First, the atmosphere. The 1920s screamed Art Deco, so I needed to embrace that aesthetic. Think geometric patterns, bold colours (gold, black, emerald green were my friends), and luxurious details. I raided charity shops for anything remotely Deco – old lamps with fringed shades, geometric-patterned vases, even some vintage ashtrays (strictly for decorative purposes, of course!).
I created a makeshift photo booth with a black backdrop, gold streamers, and feather boas. People loved hamming it up for the camera. Tablecloths were black with gold confetti scattered liberally, and candles in geometric holders added a warm, inviting glow.
Dress Code: Flapper Flair (and Beyond!)
Of course, a good theme demands a dress code. I encouraged guests to embrace flapper style – think drop-waist dresses, beaded headbands, and T-strap shoes. For the men, it was all about pinstripe suits, fedoras, and bow ties. Honestly, seeing everyone dressed up added so much to the overall vibe. It felt like stepping into a time machine! Even if you’re not completely convinced, have some props to hand, a feather boa, a hat – you’ll be amazed how even the most reluctant participant can get in the spirit!
Jazzing It Up: The Soundtrack to the Era
No Speakeasy is complete without jazz music. I created a playlist featuring classics from Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, and Bessie Smith. I also found some more modern takes on jazz that blended in seamlessly. Even if you don’t have the budget for a live band (which would be incredible, let’s be honest), a good playlist is essential.
Cocktails and Mocktails: A Nod to Prohibition
Naturally, drinks were a crucial part of the experience. I set up a DIY cocktail station with all the essentials: gin, whisky, rum, vermouth, and a variety of mixers, garnishes, and bitters. I also included a few signature cocktail recipes – a French 75, a Sidecar, and a Mint Julep. For those who preferred non-alcoholic options, I created a selection of “mocktails,” like a ginger beer fizz with lime and mint, and a cranberry and soda spritzer. Presentation is key – think coupe glasses, swizzle sticks, and plenty of garnish!
Activities to Remember: Charleston, Casino, and Conversation
To keep everyone entertained, I planned a few activities. A Charleston dance lesson was a huge hit! I found a local dance instructor who taught us the basics, and we were all swinging and shimmying in no time. I also set up a casino night with play money. I had blackjack, roulette, and poker tables, and guests could win prizes for accumulating the most chips. This sort of interactive element really encouraged guests to mingle and engage. You can buy casino game sets very easily online and they are a really great addition to the evening’s entertainment. If you are worried about older guests participating, set up the gambling area so that they can sit and have a clear view of what is happening, then make sure they have the best seat in the house!
Orangery Secret: A Den of Decadence (E-Cigarettes Only!)
Because I have an orangery it felt like a perfect space to transform it into a kind of secret gambling den and designated smoking area. I draped it with dark fabrics, added some plush seating, and dimmed the lights to create a more intimate atmosphere. Of course, given the times, this was strictly for e-cigarettes only! It added an element of mystery and intrigue to the party and kept a dedicated space for those who enjoy vaping in a private setting. This will not apply to every party obviously but it shows how an orangery can transform from space to dining area depending on your needs.
A Timeless Evening
Looking back, the Speakeasy party was a roaring success. The combination of the Art Deco decor, flapper attire, jazz music, cocktails (and mocktails), and engaging activities created an immersive and unforgettable experience. It was a testament to the power of themed parties to transport guests to another time and place, fostering a sense of fun, camaraderie, and shared enjoyment. It felt like a time travelling adventure and a really successful themed party. Try it, I promise you will not be disappointed.
